"We bicycled back to the sea and climbed a small hill to a little promontory that jutted out over one end of the beach. Below, dark fishermen were letting out their nets. On the promontory, we plotted Winona's death."

Author Karl Drobnic

I hope you enjoy reading A Lesion of Dissent as much as I enjoyed writing it.
And I want you to read it.
That's why I've priced it at $0.99 - less than a cup of good coffee.

I've placed some excerpts from various chapters to the right, along with some photos, and I hope they're enough to entice you to read more.

Smashwords.com and Amazon.com offer generous free samples, but my hope is that at $0.99, you'll just go ahead and download the complete novel.

The Rim of the Blue Nile Gorge
image, picture, Blue Nile, blue nile, nile, gorge, canyon, Gondar, Lake Tana, rim, wind swept
"Carol let loose a blue bandana. Her long brown hair caught in an updraft sweeping out of the gorge. Her jeans were tight and faded, and her summer blouse, white, rippled in the breeze. Our packs were dropped beside the dusty road and we stood at the canyon's rim. A treetop was pushing up above the valley walls at the tips of our shoes, and very much I wanted to kiss Carol. But she was held in private communion, poised at the lip of the beginnings of histories, immersed in the silence of visions I did not share."

Where the Blue Nile meets the White Nile, Khartoum

"I passed down silent streets, through empty squares and along sidewalks over which arched broad, fat palms. Later, in the gray light of early dawn, I stood on the bridge at the joining of the two Niles, the White Nile winding down from the center of Africa on my left, and on my right, once more, the Blue Nile. It was swollen now, its flow swifter and deeper than the morning Carol had left me standing on its banks in the green Ethiopian valley."

Desert Sun over Lake Nasser

Evening sunlight splintered off the brass crescent that topped the point of the minaret. "I wish we had a boat," Carol said, "so we could row out and watch the moon rise from the landing on the minaret."
"We could call some prayers. They'd carry a hundred miles over the lake."
"And what if Allah heard?" Carol asked.
"I guess I've always thought God would be farther off than a hundred miles. Farther off than he'd hear my call."

The Beach at Goa

"Winona and I had spent that morning walking on the beaches, where the white sand sparkled in the strong sun and dolphins jumped in the gentle breakers just offshore. Squads of flying fishes were exploding out of the water in front of the dolphins' pursuit.
Winona had disrobed to a bikini at the beach, and I could not help noting that it was not rusty red."

"We drove with our headlights out, a scout jeep to the front, making a wide circle until we were driving straight back east towards the now fully risen moon. We found Mad Henry, silhouetted by the moonlight, his head leaned against a scraggly acacia tree. "Rifle," the Commissioner said. I handed it to him. Commissioner Williams checked the breach, and remained seated, sighting out over the hood of the open jeep, leaning forward to brace his elbow on the dashboard."

Benares, Holy City of India

image, picture, Benares, benares, holy, marigold, candle, india, hindu, chicago, nixon, resurrection, democratic

"On a hot August night in India, I sat on my bunk in the large common room of a dak bungalow in Benares and I listened to Radio Moscow report the Battle of Chicago. Far away from the holy city where I bunked, another city's police rioted and clubbed the spirit of a generation into the hard concrete of the streets outside the convention hall where Democrats in disarray met to choose a candidate to oppose the resurrection of Richard M. Nixon. Hashish smoke filled the room, and the bungalow's caretaker had laid cut marigolds on the broad, plastered windowsills."
