THE COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVES

Snatch Defeat from the Jaws of Victory

The media`s seemingly endless and generally obscene deification of former "most-popular-president-ever" Ronald Reagan prompted us to release a "golden oldie" originally written during the Reagan era and further refined during the Bush #41 error [sic]. Our parents always told us to never speak ill of the dead, but in light of collective amnesia currently being exhibited by the ever-so-sycophantic mainstream media and the generally dubious Grover Norquist, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of people who eagerly queued up to pay tribute, we felt compelled to share a few unpleasant factoids:

 LYRICS

Something is missing but you don't know what it is
When you can't see the sky through all the buildings that surround you
And you don't hear the Earth crying out beneath the pavement
But you try not to worry as you become distracted
By the faces of the passersby and the same old numb reaction...
Stupefaction

You took the long road to make a short hop
You took the last train... this is the first stop
You have no choice but to disagree
As I watch you snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

The less you choose to say the more I understand
How you don't like your job although you make a decent living
But you wouldn't trade the way you are for the way that you were then
And you still prefer to make love not war but you're not a virgin anymore
'Cause you think we should be strong in case Saddam decides to play it rough
Then we'll call his bluff

You took the long road to make a short hop
You took the last train... this is the first stop
You have no choice but to disagree
As I watch you snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

You had the morals of a paragon of youth
But you kept getting older and you stopped getting wiser
Then you lost sight of virtue as you fell into favor
With a hopeless gang of imbeciles who all devoured your flavor
Now you can walk among them since there's nothing left to savor
