The Pond Doctor

Pond Respiration

Ponds breath; air is composed of nitrogen and oxygen; and the gasses in the pond are hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, acetic acid and methane.  All except methane are heavier than water and reside in the bottom of the pond.  Ammonia and carbon dioxide are great fertilizer to grow weeds.  If you pump air through an air diffuser at the deepest point in the pond, you will lift the water and at the same time lift the fertilizer out of the pond.  This cannot be done with fountains and waterfalls because you are moving water with them.  By using diffused air, you are employing Mother Nature's Gas Law discovered by Dr. Boyle that states "gases in a miscible fluid must equilibrate when air is pumped into that fluid (water)."  So out pops the fertilizer.

Plants Do this too.

The shore plants consume the fertilizer and block fertilizer from entering the pond.  When the shore plants respire (breath), they take heat out of the pond by evaporation off of their leaves using sunlight as the energy source.  The cold water produced by the plants sinks to the bottom of the pond.  Sunlight on the water at the surface heats the water and it is sent to the shore.  This upwelling causes a slight current in the pond; but this does not occur without plants.

Why Use an Aerator?

If you wish to remove the gases from the pond immediately, you can use artificial nutrient replacement.  You first set-up a fermentation in the pond using barley straw, this provides substrate for pond bacteria.  Using the pond bacteria, all of the organic in the pond is changed into the gases and you blow them out of the pond with the rotary vein pump shown above.

Costs

The pump must last at least five years to get the pond plants growing so they can take over.  And you want a pump that is capable of operating 24/7 - 365. Most only use the pumps six months; turning them off in the winter and moth balling the diffuser and motor.   The Pond Doctor uses a high wind electrical motor that can be repaired with a rotary vein drive that also can be repaired.  The diffusers are sintered glass delivering the finest divided air possible and because it is glass can be cleaned with mason's hydrochloric acid.  Lak Pak pond bacteria comes in 24 self dissolving half pound packets.  The barley straw can be obtain for as little as $3 per bale; the 1/3 hp aerator and diffuser is $890; and the Lak Pak pond bacteria per box is $375.  Plus shipping.

Or

1,000 pond plants at $500 and wait three years.

If you plant and set up aeration, you will rapidly achieve pond health.
