Who we are

Samaritan House, Inc. is a nonprofit organization in Newport, Oregon, established in 1988 to provide emergency shelter and meals to homeless families. Since that time our program has expanded to include transitional shelter, case management and support services to assist families in achieving self-sufficiency and stable housing. Ours is a program of compassion, but with expectations that our residents will be responsible for the successful outcomes of their stay with us.

Our mission is to provide the homeless with shelter and assistance toward independence.

Our facility

Samaritan House is currently the only family homeless shelter on the central Oregon coast between Tillamook to the north and Coos Bay to the south. We moved into our newly renovated facility (formerly the Tides Inn motel) in March, 2003. We recently opened two of the three dormitory-style units that we were unable to operate due to lack of funding. These units will be used for the emergency shelter program; they consist of bedroom and bath and will share the common kitchen for meal preparation and dining. We hope to open the third unit by July 2009. Six 1-bedroom and two 2-bedroom apartments are available for families in the transitional stages of our program.

Who we serve

The Samaritan House shelter program currently serves homeless families with children under the age of 18. Families often lose their homes because of a crisis: a job layoff, domestic violence, or health problems. Many people today are only a paycheck or two away from becoming homeless; high unemployment rates and low-wage jobs increase the problem. Without adequate resources, families cannot afford to pay the move-in costs (an average of $1500-$2000) to get re-established in housing. Samaritan House offers homeless families a place from which to make a new beginning..
